Should I stay or should I go?
I have always wanted to pursue a career in visual arts; something I enjoy and am naturally gifted in. After graduating high school I landed a job at a corporation where I sat behind a desk all day. For the first year I was absolutely miserable because there was close to no creative outlet in my work. But the money was great so I ended up staying and moving up the corporate ladder.
8 years later, here I sit behind a desk, making great money, pushing numbers all day -hating my job. The thing is I have a three year old daughter to support so going back to school, or switching careers now seems so out of reach. I am able to provide a good quality life for my daughter now, and I am use to having money and nice things, but I can hardly stand sitting behind this desk all day.
I’m just wondering if there is anyone out there who experienced a similar situation? Did you leave corporate america to pursue your art? Was it rewarding?
I have to give you kudos for staying at a job you didn’t like for so long. A lot of people barely make it a year before they leave. I think you should try to find a college to take some classes part time maybe. I know having money is great and you have to provide for your daughter, but maybe you can save money or invest for a backup plan. Even though you have made it this long with a job you hate, I don’t think you can make it much longer because your hate for the job will eventually make you leave. You have to do something you love. No one wants to have a job they can’t stand all their lives. You have to decide how strong your passion is for creativity, then you will find a way to make it work for you and your daughter.
