No Small Miracles
Joel Morgan planned to visit missionaries in Eastern Europe. He asked some friends who had done extensive travel what he should pack. His friends explained that he would want to bring some snacks to eat because he might have a hard time finding something agreeable in the small villages.
Walking into a grocery store, he offered a small prayer that he might choose food that would clear customs. Before leaving he decided to pick up Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, tapioca pudding, gum, and some small cans of fruit cocktail. Before long he found himself in Romania where he spent the evening with a missionary family.
Joel enjoyed strong conversation and laughter with a young couple and their teenage daughters who were anxious to hear about recent events in America. Feeling a deep bond with the family, he told them that he would like to give them some Christmas gifts before he moved on, even though it was only October.
Opening his backpack, he asked the young girls, “If you could have one thing from America, what would it be?” They both excitedly shared, “Candy!” Then their mother said they that especially loved Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Holding back tears, Joel reached in his bag and pulled out the chocolate, much to the delight of everyone in the room who didn’t know if they should laugh or cry.
Catching his breath, Joel asked the mother the same question he had asked the girls. She told him that she missed being able to eat citrus fruit. Trembling, Joel pulled out the cans of fruit cocktail as elation filled everyone in the small home.
Joel then asked the father, “What is your favorite dessert?” Smiling, the dad said that he liked something no one else enjoyed eating, tapioca pudding.” Unable to contain his emotions, Joel produced the package of tapioca pudding God led him to purchase a week earlier and 4,000 miles away. There in a small Romanian town five people expressed gratitude and wonder to God above that there are no small miracles.
I remember when I first heard Joel Morgan’s story relayed by Rick Warren. As I listened to Warren talk about such a fantastic moment, it made me stop and reflect on events that I have known and appreciate the bigger picture. Sir William Temple once said, “When I pray, coincidences happen, and when I don’t, they don’t.”
The key is to slow down long enough to notice the marvel of the moment, even if for only five minutes. All around us amazing things are there for us to behold and embrace with childlike wonder.
As C.S. Lewis so aptly put it, “Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.” So be on the lookout, you never know when you might witness the next miracle. In fact, it may just happen on a simple stop at the grocery store.

Christmas Gifts Romanian Questions
Where should I display my fake parking sign?
Ok, my husband got this fake parking sign that says; “Parking for Romanians Only” – as a gift from his co-worker last Christmas. I am quite afraid to offend someone by displaying it in our driveway, or anywhere in front of the house. It seems that everyone gets offended these days, and I don’t want to ‘throw hay over the burning fire’, if you know what I mean. So… what do you suggest I do? It was meant as a funny thing, but I can’t have fun with it. I catch my mom sometimes covering the garbage bin with it and it ails me! Any thoughts?
If you are unsure…and, if you have a garage, maybe a inside wall? However, I would be proud of the heritage…what is wrong with Romanians???? (My grandmother is Bohemian) I would put it where ever I wished…let those who hate for no reason worry about it…have fun with it as it was intended! Enjoy!
