A Tribute To True British Bravery

Trafalgar Square in London is known all over the world as a premier pigeon feeding spot however the cultural and historical significance of this British monument remains undisputed. Originally built to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar that took place in 1805, it was a commissioned as a mark of respect to the British sailors who took part in the landmark naval victory in the Napoleonic Wars.

A visit to London is undoubtedly incomplete with out a visit to Trafalgar square to marvel at the Nelson column, the numerous fountains and to feed the ever present pigeons. Without doubt the centerpiece of the attraction is Nelson’s column which is surrounded by water fountains and four majestic bronze lions, the metal used for the lions is rumored to have been taken from the canons of the French naval vessels that were defeated by the Brits. On top of the column is the commander of the British fleet Lord Horatio Nelson attired in his naval uniform.

On the four corners of the square are four plinths, of them only three are permanently occupied. The northern plinths hold equestrian statutes of George IV and Henry Havelock while a statue of Sir John Napier occupies the south western quarter, The fourth plinth though constructed does not hold a permanent statue, sculptures of contemporary artistes are usually exhibited here in a revolving basis, while a model of David Bekham was put up by Madam Tussads prior to the 2002 Soccer World cup.

To the northern end of Trafalgar square the National gallery can be found that houses over 2,000 paintings by prominent artists. On the lawn in front of the National Gallery two statues of James II and George Washington have been erected. The latter was a gift from the United States and is built on soil brought from the US to honor Washington’s pledge of never setting foot on British soil.

Trafalgar Square is used by the British government as place of congregation and as a place to hold important national events. Celebrations of sports victories such as winning the Rugby World in 2003 and the Ashes in 2005 were held here. Major sporting matches such as the England Brazil Quarter final clash during the 2002 World Cup were telecast live on a giant screen at Trafalgar. However the most well known is the Christmas celebrations that are held here, annually Norway gifts a large Christmas tree that is erected and colorfully decorated in the square. The square has also been a popular gathering place for dissidents and political parties that conduct protest marches and rallies, also a prayer vigil was held here following the terrorist bombings in London.

Trafalgar square being located in a highly residential and a popular area of the city is in close proximity to many hotels in London. Comfortable accommodation and excellent opportunities of soaking in the delights of this cosmopolitan yet historical British city can be found in these London hotels.

Christmas Gifts Equestrian Questions

What do you get your school friends for Christmas? (like a food goodie or small items)?

I have 12 close school friends and like 15 close barn friends (I’m an equestrian who loves my barn time =] ) and every year I get each of them a card along with some type of goody, and if we’re really close I get them another small type of gift. For example, last year I made homemade sugar cookies and chocolates and divided them among everyone along with a card. With the way the economy is I have to really budget so I am looking for inexpensive ideas! Thanks so much for any help you might have for me!

Write out cards for them and attach a candy cane with a red ribbon for each of them! =)
