Be Very Careful of Funny Birthday Gifts and Humorous Gift Ideas

The temptation is great, isn’t it? You’ve seen a really quirky, funny gift that is sure to impress all your mates when you give it to that unsuspecting someone at their birthday party. But, before you hand over your hard earned cash for this most funny of birthday gifts, it might be time to think again. Humorous gifts can very well backfire on you.

Take the friend who we shall call Jim (for that is his name), who thought it would be beyond funny to get our mutual friend Mike some ‘funny’ post it notes as a gift. Mike is one of these people who can barely see his monitor, so covered with post it notes is it. So, you can see where Jim was going with this.

Unfortunately, one of these terrible amusing post it notes said ‘Great News About The Job. Take It’. Jim thought it would be very funny to add that one to the collection of notes on his monitor. Unfortunately, Mike’s boss saw it first. What Jim and Mike didn’t know was that the company they both worked for was undergoing some restructuring and there were to be redundancies.Result: Mike gets fired. Not so funny now, is it.

This is a fairly extreme example, but it is probably wise to think before you get that amusing gift.

To be honest, though, even the most well-meaning gifts can have disasterous consequences. I once bought an ex-girlfriend, Lucie (for that was her cat’s name), a makeover day for her birthday. I thought I was being thoughtful, but had forgotten that Lucie was the least secure person I had ever met and, naturally, decided that I was trying to tell her she looked awful. This, in part, explains why she is an ex-girlfriend.

I guess the only conclusion I can come to here is that before buying any gift, it’s probably best to think twice about whether it is really the right present to get.
