Surprise Party Ideas to Help You Catch Anyone Off-Guard!

Although a surprise party certainly requires a lot more effort and energy to pull off, when successful, it is well worth it! I surprised my husband on his 40th birthday with a party and he was so shocked and “surprised”, that he literally had to sit down because his legs were shaking. I got him good!

PLAN YOUR SURPRISE PARTY EARLY ON

To make this party a success, you must start the planning early and enlist the assistance of others as necessary. Learn the fine art of delegation and you will arrive at the party ready to enjoy the festivities instead of being wide-eyed and exhausted.

SURPRISE PARTY MUST-HAVE WORDING FOR INVITATIONS

The most important part of the invitation is the part that clearly conveys that the party is to be a surprise. Be sure to put something like, Shhhh, it’s a surprise party for (name) on the front of the invite. After you put all of the party details inside, once again, remind everyone that mums the word and to keep their yaps shut! Let them know to RSVP via e-mail or to use a ruse when leaving a message. Too many phone calls from people who don’t regularly call, can certainly cause the birthday person to become wise to your game.

SURPRISE PARTY IDEAS FOR DIVERTING BIRTHDAY PERSON’S ATTENTION

If you’re hosting the surprise party on a Saturday night, then hold a small nondescript birthday party in the afternoon with just the family. Have a small cake and give a small gift. Then spring the real deal on them that night.

If you’re planning to have someone occupy the birthday person while you decorate the house, be sure not to do something out of the ordinary. Have someone initiate the activity two weeks before the party. Lunch and golf are ideal, as this takes several hours to complete. However, if the birthday person doesn’t play golf, this would be a disastrous suggestion. Whomever you select as your accomplice and whatever activity is chosen, must just flow into another planned activity with a friend–no big deal.

If you’re holding the party at a restaurant, and it is unusual for you to go out, you could blow the whole surprise right there. Instead, let them know you are taking them out for a special family birthday dinner.

To truly pull off the surprise, enlist the help of restaurant personnel. Go to the desk, announce your name and have the restaurant tell you they don’t have your reservation and, they’re booked solid, and won’t be able to accommodate you for at least 2-3 hours. Argue a little with them, tell them you are there because it’s your husband’s favorite restaurant, and it’s his birthday. Eventually, the restaurant will tell you if you’re willing to wait a few minutes they can set-up a table in an area they don’t generally use and will compliment the birthday person’s dinner for the confusion. Talk it up with your husband about how sorry you are, that you’ll make it up to him, how you wanted his birthday to be special, etc. Then when the restaurant personnel takes you to the birthday room, voila’ SURPRISE!

If the party is being held at your home, be sure to have people park well away from the house so familiar cars aren’t spotted on the street by the birthday recipient.

Remember to keep party decor, food, supplies all well hidden in the days leading up to the party so they aren’t accidentally discovered before the big event.

Bottom Line: Think outside the box. Plan for the what ifs’, imagine how things will play out if you do something in a certain way to anticipate possible problems. Surprise parties definitely require more effort, but they are so worth it when the end result is complete and utter surprise!
